JAN BARNETT

ABOUT

I work from my beloved garden studio in West Sussex, having relocated from London in 2015. My resulting work took a new direction into brighter, lighter colours and softer lines, reflecting the contrast between the hard edges of urban London landscapes to the beautiful light and colour of the south coast with soft undulations of the Southdown National Park. I work in many genres – a favourite being still life, whether flowers or objects. I occasionally paint cats and birds and recently a dog. My ideas spring from anything, whether it’s an old photo from a past holiday trip or something I suddenly see from a bus or on a walk. I photograph things that I might later turn into a painting. I am also fond of portrait and belong to small art group in my local village, sourcing our models from friends and neighbours. I work mostly in acrylics, but also in oils, watercolours, gouache and pastels. I love to draw, in any medium, including more recently digital. I originally took a foundation course in Art at the West Sussex School of Art and Crafts, then based in Worthing, then obtained my BA (hons) degree in Printed & Woven Textiles from Camberwell School of Art in South East London.

I sold several designs on leaving and briefly ventured into fashion accessories. However, I spent my career in the world of media and advertising. About 20 ago I left that to make and sell greetings cards – both locally and to The Southbank Centre, and I took up painting taking several small commissions. I enrolled at the Conservatoire of Art & Music in Blackheath to revisit life drawing (not done since student days). Next I took part in weekly, 6 hour sessions of painting: developing my own ideas onto canvas and here I met with some talented artists and students. I began exhibiting successfully at various venues in SE London. I’ve had six paintings shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions.

Here in West Sussex I’ve taken part in Worthing Artists Open Houses, a joint exhibition at Colonnade House, Worthing with two other artists and had a Summer 2022 solo exhibition also at Colonnade House. I was selected for The WTM Open 21 Biennial exhibition in October 2021. I’ve also had my work displayed at Wine and Reason, Worthing and Partners in Wine, Goring by Sea.

I belong to the Arun Art Society and have just been accepted as a member of the West Sussex Art Society.
I have images as greetings cards for sale of many of my paintings and illustrations.

I will be delighted to accept commissions
